MOLDING PLASTIC PARTS

by Bill Wicks

The following process was used to make plastic wreathes for the gun ports of the model of the Prince of 1670. Materials Needed:

  1. "Alumilite" Casting Material, a two-part system. Costs approximately $30.
  2. "Mold It" material for mold making. Costs approximately $17.

Procedure:

  1. Make master part from wood or wax.
  2. Mount master on flat wood surface
  3. Add four "walls" around master to form open box.
  4. Pour "Mold It" into box. Completely cover master part.
  5. After mold material has set, remove mold from master. Mold material is flexible.
  6. Carefully mix two parts of "Alumilite system. Mix only as much as is needed immediately. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
  7. Pour carefully into mold, avoiding bubble formation. Mold release is not required.
  8. After a few minutes the "Alumilite will begin to harden.
  9. Remove hardened part from mold and remove any flash. Paint or add gold leaf as desired
