   MAKING A MODEL SHIP CRADLE
Don Dressel

I was asked by several members of the SMA to draw up the ship model cradle/stand that I
had brought in several months ago. In an effort to do so, here are the basic dimensions of
the aluminum parts for the cradle, an attempt to draw the dimensions for those who may
want to make one, and pictures of the cradle that I have. I do not remember where I
obtained the item or where it was purchased from. The two long pieces are 25 ¾ inches
long by 2 inches high by ½ inch thick. The two short pieces are 6 ¼ inches long by 1 3/8
inches high by ½ inches thick. There are a total of eight knobs, of two different sizes, the
larger for the long pieces and the smaller for the smaller pieces.

Spaces between the two long pieces are as follows:
2 ¾ inches to upper hole, 6 ¾ inches between holes to forth hole, the final 2 ¾ inches.
Upper holes are for knobs, lower holes are in one piece only (see photo). Lower holes
are for bolts that establish spacing with nuts to control depth. This piece is screwed to the
two short pieces from the bottom. The second piece floats free and only needs holes for
knots to pass through. Groves cut in the aluminum are to fit the lower, shorter pieces
and are ½ inch in from the ends. The groves are 1 ¼ inches wide and ¼ inches deep.

Located on the two small pieces is the screw which attaches the one long piece to
each “leg”. The two holes are for the smaller knots that adjust the height. If there are
any questions, give me a call and I will try and explain further.
