   Adhesives

by Frank Wilhite

As part of my talk at the February "WORK IN PROGRESS" meeting I mentioned several adhesives I had successfully used. The following is a list of those adhesives with additional information on each:

TITEBOND II

TYPE: Catalyzed polyvinyl acetate (PVA); yellow wood glue. MFR: Franklin International, (800) 347-4583.

USE: Adhering porous surfaces.

TACK: 5 sec. after surfaces pressed together . CURE: 24 hours.

STRENGTH: 3675 psi for hard maple.

GAP FILLER: Somewhat, but does not reach full strength.

WATERPROOF: Water resistant.

COMMENT: If parts are not under stress, holding them together using fingers or hands for 5 sec. then carefully setting aside for 24 hours is sufficient to achieve good bond without clamping.

GORILLA GLUE

TYPE: Translucent yellow polyurethane.

MFR: Lutz File and Tool Co., (800) 966-3458.

USE: Adhering porous and/or nonporous surfaces. TACK: 90% cure in 1-4 hours. CURE: 24 hours.

STRENGTH: 3200 psi for yellow birch.

GAP FILLER: Foaming action allows filling of large gaps, but full strength only achieved between close fitting parts.

WATERPROOF: Yes.

COMMENT: If strength is not a problem, great for filling large gaps and cavities.

30 MIN. SLO-CURE

TYPE: Clear two-part epoxy .

MFR: Bob Smith Industries, (800) 223-7699.

USE: Adhering porous and/or nonporous surfaces. TACK: 2 hours. CURE: 8 hours.

STRENGTH: 5,000 psi.

GAP FILLER:

WATERPROOF; Yes

COMMENT: This epoxy is the strongest of the Bob Smith product line; if the temperature is below 70 F., use heat gun to thin before applying.

INST A-CURE

TYPE: Clear water-thin cyanoacrylate(CA).

MFR: Bob Smith Industries, (800)223-7699.

USE: Adhering porous and/or nonporous surfaces.

TACK: 1- 3 sec.

CURE: less than 1 hour.

STRENGTH: 4,200 psi

GAP FILLER: No.

WATERPROOF: Water resistant.

COMMENT: Use the normal application technique of wicking a small drop between two surfaces pressed together

MAXI-CURE

TYPE: Clear extra thick cyanoacrylate (CA).

MFR: Bob Smith Industries, (800) 223-7699.

USE: Adhering porous and/or nonporous surfaces. TACK: 10- 25 sec. CURE: 3 hours.

STRENGTH: 5,000 psi

GAP FILLER: Yes, up to .010 in.

WATERPROOF: Yes.

COMMENT: Do not spread on surface; instead, apply one drop (or "running" bead on large surfaces) then press surfaces together tightly for TACK time.

IC-2000

TYPE: Black rubber combined with cyanoacrylate.

MFR: Bob Smith Industries, (800)223-7699.

USE: Use where high strength is required and black color is acceptable.

TACK: 30 sec.

CURE: 3 hours.

STRENGTH: 7,000 psi.

GAP FILLER: Yes, up to .015 in.

WATERPROOF: Yes

COMMENT: Do not spread on surface; instead, apply one drop (or "running bead on large surfaces) then press surfaces together tightly for TACK time.

MATTE MEDIUM

TYPE: Clear acrylic emulsion MFR: Liquitex

USE: Secure rigging knots.

COMMENT: Matte Medium has two advantages over CA and other adhesives for this use: 1) Invisible when dry because of its matte appearance; 2) remains flexible when dry so that knot can be untied easier.

NOTE: Keep all above CA adhesives in refrigerator to prolong life; can be used immediately after removal from refrigerator .
