"Hacchoro"
Constructed by Clare Hess

This is a 1/24th scale model of an Edo Period 8-oared fishing boat built from a kit by Woody Joe of Japan. This boat model is shown carrying the "Mon" or crest of the Tokugawa Shogunate. History says that 24 of these boats were commissioned to serve as escorts for the Shogun when traveled to his hunting grounds. However, due to restrictions placed on the number of oars allowed, they had a difficult time, so were given special permission to use 8 oars, hence the name Hacchoro, which means "8 oars."
